The Homeschool Advantage is a podcast about reclaiming learning as a way of life.
Hosted by educator, author, and instructional leader Bex Buzzie, the show explores how families, teachers, and educational leaders can support meaningful learning—whether children are homeschooled, enrolled in public or charter schools, or navigating a blend of both.
Drawing from over two decades in education and recent work in educational leadership, Bex brings together voices from across the learning landscape, including homeschool families, classroom teachers, curriculum creators, microschools, co-ops, and education innovators.
This is not a podcast about choosing the “perfect” system.
It’s about partnership, posture, and presence.
Whether you’re a parent supporting learning at home, a teacher rethinking instruction, or an educator seeking deeper alignment between school and life, The Homeschool Advantage offers thoughtful conversations, practical insights, and a return to the basics of how learning actually happens.
Because homeschooling isn’t a location.
It’s a posture.

Keicha Barnum CEO and Founder of BRC Tech Education but to her students she's Mrs. B. She has used her degree, certifications in technology and design, and experience in both the corporate world and as an entrepreneur to design a more impactful framework for STEAM education that teaches students to learn by “doing”. For more than 10 years I have partnered with talented instructors, created innovative hands-on curriculum and brought the coolest technology to students who have never used a 3D printer, coded a drone, or even dreamed of creating a 3D animation. The result – a blueprint for a uniquely geeky educational community equipped to inspire the next generation of STEAM professionals.
Top three takeaways
- Homeschooling should be relevant and look more like the world our kiddos will be living/working in one day.
- Homeschooling is not one size fits all. Every student has different needs, every family has different resources, and all schooling is not done at home.
- There is virtually no such thing as age appropriate education just levels (as long as the material is wholesome). You can teach your child what you know in the industry you work in, they will be able to understand.

Homeschooling Doesn’t Have To Be Expensive with CEO Of CAP Kids Miranda Lee

Intro
CAP Kids was designed specifically to develop foundational skills of language, mathematics and life skills. Back to basics. Building a strong foundation in these areas assists success in many other areas.
Top three takeaways
- Homeschooling doesn't have to be expensive! Private schools have tricked us into believing that the more money you throw at educating your child, the better they will be educated and prepared for life. The truth is that learning happens everywhere
- A parent is a child's first teacher - a child learns how to talk, walk and love from a parent. Moral values, beliefs and so much more are taught to children as soon as they are born.
- Homeschooling is simply an extension of parenting.

Jennifer White began working with Inspired Virtual just after the pandemic. The online platform was created when the in-person microschool was forced to go online. The model transferred into an effective online community and the platform expanded to offer classes to a wider audience. In addition to her work with Inspired Virtual she and her husband host a website called Should I Homeschool, as another way to encourage parents who are undecided to take the next steps and try homeschool for one year. Aside from teaching her own children and teaching for Inspired Virtual, she speaks at homeschooling events and encourages parents who are just starting to think about homeschooling to commit to trying it for just one year. That's her passion, encouraging parent to just go for it!
Top three takeaways
- Being a credentialed teacher is more of a hinderance than a benefit when teaching homeschool, lots of unlearning to do. Homeschooling despite the name is done more outside the home than in doors!
- When you homeschool you can meet the child where they are by either challenging them or remediating for them.
- Homeschooling allows for a connection between parent and child or teacher and child that you don't normally get in a brick-and-mortar school situation.

Afsaneh Moradian M.Ed is Founder of MLC Homeschool Coaching. Afsaneh is a children’s author with over 20 years of experience as an educator, she has worked with hundreds of learners from preschool to graduate school, including students that are wired differently. Afsaneh developed a proven framework to support you in creating the right homeschooling experience for your unique child. Now as a homeschooling she intimately understands the pressure and want to assure you it doesn’t have to be that way.
She wants you to feel empowered to create a homeschooling experience filled with connection and a joy of learning for you and your child.
Top three takeaways
- Many believe that homeschooling is school at home. They think that buying a curriculum is all that’s needed to teach their child. Then they are unpleasantly surprised when their child resists.
- Each child develops and learns at their own rate and in their own way. Homeschooling has to be tailored to the individual child because development can’t be rushed and what works for one child may not work for yours.
- Once parents learn how to respond to their children without power struggles and learn how to create meaningful learning experiences, all children, but especially neurodiverse and high needs kids, can feel safe, supported, and able to thrive.

Ann Troast is the CEO and Founder of Without Doors a unique Charlotte Mason curriculum inspired by the successful lessons at Four Square Community. Using Without Doors has revitalized their homeschool and she hopes it does the same for yours. Ann is passionate about sparking JOY in home education, one family at a time.
She began her education career teaching in an elementary classroom for several years, and has spent well over a decade becoming a veteran homeschool mom.
In 2016, she founded Four Square Community – a Charlotte Mason-inspired homeschool co-op that has grown to over 500 local students. Four Square offers academic and enrichment classes for students in preschool through high school.
Beginning in 2019, her husband Matt joined her in leading and serving the growing Four Square Community. Matt brings twenty years of traditional classroom experience ranging from preschool through university. Together they authored The Book of Centuries: A Personal Timeline of History.
In 2022, I created Without Doors, I am grateful for God’s goodness and faithfulness and give Him all the glory! \
Top three takeaways
- Homeschooling does not need to look like a traditional classroom and does not operate on the same schedule as a traditional classroom. When we reduce the teacher/student ratio to the size of a family, we gain freedom and opportunity.
- In Homeschooling the lessons are efficient and effective, lessons are targeted to student learning style/interests, different tools are available for comprehension - such as having students narrate instead of filling out worksheets.
- The focus of Without Doors is to provide a simplified, family-style, Charlotte Mason curriculum for students in 1st-8th grade. The content in the Bible, History, Geography, Literature, Enrichment, and Nature Study lessons are coordinated around a time and place such as Early America or Ancient World, creating a rich, immersive experience and a harmony of lessons.

Gwen Potter is the Creator of Butterfly Ballet Club. She loves teaching ballet to children! For the past 30 years, she has shared the joy of ballet with her students. Gwen has been able to help several thousand young dancers grow in confidence and creativity through their experience of dancing in story ballet performances and she can’t wait to bring the same joy to your family at home.
Top three takeaways
- Academic work won't take the full day. Don't feel guilty if it doesn't. Working with your children one-on-one is a very efficient way for them to accomplish their work.
- Prepare yourself for February. It is the most difficult month for homeschooling. Plan some fun activities for February and don't make any major homeschool decisions during this month.
- The beauty of the ballet box is that it is very adaptable. It works with three year old and with ten year old. It has been tested and it is a great supplement to dance lessons for young dancers who want to learn more about ballet and it is a comfortable option for would-be dancers who find it overstimulating to be in the dance studio - the music & fellow students can certainly be overstimulating.

Christy (AKA “Mrs. Crabtree”) is the CEO and Founder of the Happy Hive Homeschooling she is a former classroom teacher and homeschool mom living in California with her husband, 3 “almost grown” children she calls her bugs and Captain Jack, Princess Stripes, Penny, and Percy. She also feeds a variety of backyard friends.
She didn’t send her 3 “bugs” to school because she knew no one would be a better teacher than she is. (Christy tends to be a bit over the top) She was also terrified, quite frankly.
Christy designed happy Hive Homeschooling to make your homeschool years the best they can be. Happy Hive provides courses, coaching, and a unique holiday of the day curriculum designed for any homeschool method. It is their goal to help you recognize the importance of your homeschool mindset in the overall educational experience of your children.
Happy Hive (then known as the Gandara Bug Academy) used an off-the-cuff curriculum vs. textbooks. The best “curriculum” the Happy Hive Homeschool ever used was the year we based everything we did on the “Holiday of the Day”. It was an amazing year full of learning and memories.
This is the sweet spot they want to help you incorporate the holiday of the day into your homeschool, so you too can explore the deeds and adventures of heroic & legendary figures as well as important events throughout history.
Top three takeaways
- Celebration brings Memories. What better way to spend your children's learning years creating life long memories.
- Learning about holidays brings many educational moments in history.
- Celebrations connect us all to each other.

Rebecca Devitt CEO and Founder of How do I homeschool. Bec found so much success with homeschooling, that she became interested in promoting home education to others as a better way to educate children. Her journey down this blogging road started in 2013 when I wrote a 16,000-word dissertation on homeschooling for one of her friends who is now homeschooling! She then published Why on Earth Homeschool in 2017. After this, she launched the howdoihomeschool.com website in 2018 and shortly after launched the YouTube Channel called How Do I Homeschool.
Over the years, she has spent a tremendous amount of time studying classical, Charlotte Mason, and other educational methods and has thrown herself into analyzing curriculum options to present her readers with great options that suit their worldview and chosen educational methods.
Rebecca loves supporting new homeschooling parents her prayer is that these efforts will one day be acknowledged before God when he says, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’
Top three takeaways
- You won't be always teaching children. They learn how to learn at home, so end up homeschooling themselves in the later years.
- Homeschooling can be fun and joyful, but sometimes we don't know how to get it there. Rebecca's course aims to fill that gap so parents don't have to spend years making mistakes.
- Homeschooling takes time and love to do well. If you have plenty of that, it's hard to go wrong.
