The Homeschool Advantage is a podcast about reclaiming learning as a way of life.
Hosted by educator, author, and instructional leader Bex Buzzie, the show explores how families, teachers, and educational leaders can support meaningful learning—whether children are homeschooled, enrolled in public or charter schools, or navigating a blend of both.
Drawing from over two decades in education and recent work in educational leadership, Bex brings together voices from across the learning landscape, including homeschool families, classroom teachers, curriculum creators, microschools, co-ops, and education innovators.
This is not a podcast about choosing the “perfect” system.
It’s about partnership, posture, and presence.
Whether you’re a parent supporting learning at home, a teacher rethinking instruction, or an educator seeking deeper alignment between school and life, The Homeschool Advantage offers thoughtful conversations, practical insights, and a return to the basics of how learning actually happens.
Because homeschooling isn’t a location.
It’s a posture.

Teaching in Disguise With Johanna CEO of STOP READ GO

Intro
Johanna, CEO of Stop Read Go. STOP READ GO is an early literacy company, created with your littles in mind. This site focuses on introducing the World of Reading to babies, toddlers (1-3) and preschoolers (3-5) in a way that is more tangible, meaningful, and intuitive.
Johanna left the IT world to stay home when her little boy was born. This experience made her realize that children are much more capable than we believe them to be and that there is a huge learning potential inside of them. And in order to unlock this potential, we need to enable them, encourage them and give them the tools they need to succeed. Their built-in curiosity coupled with an enriching, loving and safe environment is all they need.
Now, Johanna wants to encourage and help other parents, caregivers and educators to do the same! How? By sharing her story and unique method and by creating early literacy products that makes Reading easier for you to teach and easier for them to learn.
The idea is not to force kids to memorize a list of random words or rules from a piece of paper, but to make reading a part of their daily lives, routines and activities, by incorporating reading in such a way that they won’t even realize they are learning or that you are teaching them (aka. Teaching in Disguise).
Top three takeaways
- Each child is unique, so their education needs to be customized to their unique individual needs and wants.
- How her method and products take advantage of the natural abilities children's brains come pre-built with.
- How Stop Read Go provides parents and caregivers with the tools and the information they need to teach their children to read from an early age.

Carolyn VanGorkam, the editing coordinator for SchoolhouseTeachers.com, the curriculum arm of The Old Schoolhouse and also a Lesson Designer of several courses on the website. Carolyn joined Schoolhouse Teachers as a curriculum specialist on the quality assurance team; she is now working with the editing team as well. Her other interests include singing on the worship team, writing historical novels (she has two published on Amazon), and blogging about history and current events. You can find her website at thenovelhistorian.com.
She lives in Northern California with her family. Her husband, Dan, is a local worship pastor. Both of their children – homeschooled from 2006 – have now graduated from high school. Carolyn’s 16-year homeschool journey was preceded by a career as a credentialed math teacher and as a Christian school teacher of many subjects.
SchoolhouseTeachers.com has over 400 courses with a wide variety of approaches: Unit Studies, Charlotte Mason, Classical education, and more. We also have courses which cater to different learning styles some courses have mostly printed material and some have videos tailored for kids with specific need like those who learn by moving. She wish she'd been able to read when her kids were small is Kinetic Connections, which has suggestions for how to tailor learning for kids who learn by moving.
Top three takeaways
- You don't have to know all the material before you start teaching your child. You can learn alongside them!
- Newcomers think that the homeschool day should mirror a typical public school day. That approach loses the freedom and flexibility that traditional homeschooling offers.
- Deuteronomy 6:7 makes it clear that discipling our children is our primary responsibility as parents. Homeschooling allows that to happen every day. It's not easy, but it is worth it!

Alyssa Albano, Founder of The Fox Den Learning, since starting her teaching career at 16 years old, even from a young age, she could tell that not everyone learned the same way. She came to realize that students learn better when they’re guided by patient and understanding teachers who make lessons fun and engaging. Alyssa is from a small rural Canadian town that had limited programs and activities for kids so if you wanted to learn something, you didn't have much choice in who your teachers were and what type of programs you could participate in.
She was lucky to find a wonderful piano teacher who taught her to prioritize fun and fostered a love of music over progress. When Alyssa mentioned that she was interested in teaching, her piano teaxher encouraged and guided her! Thus marking the beginning of an amazing 15-year career in teaching.
Alyssa is wholeheartedly invested in seeing children thrive in a positive learning environment. The best feeling in the world is knowing that she made a positive impact on someone's life– and that will always be a foundational key piece to the Fox Den Learning. Here your student can learn and explore at their own pace with supportive and understanding teaching techniques and instill a healthy relationship with learning that embraces curiosity and enriches a child’s education from the ground up.
Top three takeaways
- Virtual classes and lessons offer access to a new world of teachers, which allows students to find someone who is truly a great fit for their learning needs and styles.
- The introduction of virtual learning has opened so many doors to alternative teaching styles and programs.
- She wanted to create a supportive environment that allows students to choose their path, and we, as their teachers, adapt to their needs to help them reach their goals.

Dr. Vanessa Rowan, Founder of Learning Biology with Dr. Vanessa. Ever since she was little, she have had a love for science and a fascination with how the body works. As she grew older, she began to work in labs and do research. She loved discovering new things! After she received my PhD in 2009, she began teaching Anatomy and Physiology, among other classes, at the University level.
The classes she taught were difficult and she enjoyed being able to take those difficult subjects and make them easier to understand. She have found a passion for teaching and increasing health literacy. The one thing we must understand is that even though not everyone will go into the medical field, there are instances in which you must be able to advocate for yourself or a loved one. The more you know about your body and how it works, the better you can understand and form those decisions.
Top three takeaways
- Homeschooling isn't always easy.
- Homeschooling doesn't need to be exactly like school.
- How Dr. Vanessa help students understand Anatomy and Physiology and how the body works and gaining basic knowledge about their body so they can make better decisions about their health in the future.

- How with technology, children can interact with others around the world with different backgrounds, and share opinions and goals. This leads to a well-rounded education for success in a globally connected world.
- Lastly that learning styles, passions, motivations, ability, and outcomes will vary from student to student no matter what type of educational experience they have access to. In their experience, no matter what, if the student enjoys the learning process, then they will come away with a much richer and meaningful experience - something that will greatly help them as they continue in a life of learning.

Intro
Dr. Rob Bell, Founder and Chief Scientist of Experimentary, getting his start with the CSIRO Education team before hosting the channel 10 science show Scope for over 11 years, Dr Rob developed a great knack for making science accessible, interesting, engaging and relevant.
He created a website "Experimentary" that is all about hands-on science, making it easier for parents to do with credible and rigorous science within it. His background is science first then some teaching, so he is really all about inspiring a love of science, and getting your hands on it is a good way.
He actually was inspired by the lack of decent hands-on science at his kids' school, and then realized the issue was translated to the homeschool community. Science seems to be an area that some are not very confident with, so his to help that. Dr Rob Bell's background is science first then some teaching, so his really all about inspiring a love of science, and getting your hands on it is a good way.
There are a range of levels within Experimentary. The content is designed for Elementary up to middle school aged children, but the open ended inquiries can be taken as far as the child likes really. For the parents, they can let the kids help themselves (self-serve student mode) or they can assign the appropriate experiments based on what they are studying. The equipment is almost all around the home or very easy to get, no fancy lab stuff (though that is fun too).
Top three takeaways
- How Robert discovered that there are a lot of families who homeschool in Australia.
- You can tie so much more into a science experiment than just the science curriculum. That is often the real advantage.
- Using the fun experiments to open up a whole lot of other bits of learning.
